There have been few studies on the relative order of the (main) subject and the quotative clause in the sentence inJapanese except Miyajima (1964) and Saeki (1975a, 1975b). The reason for this scarcity is that exchanging thepositions of these two elements does not change the logical meaning of the sentence in Japanese. Miyajima andSaeki regard the relative order of the (main) subject and the quotative clause as matters of genre, writer's personali-ty, and rhetoric. A comparative study on Japanese and Korean, however, can make it clear that it is not simply amatter of genre or style of a writer. Using my own data on modern Japanese novels and their Korean translations, Iindicate in this paper that the subject tends to appear after the quotative clause in Japanese. I also present my opin-ion that understanding of the relative order of the subject and the quotative clause may contribute to the betterunderstanding of the linguistic characteristics of Japanese and Korean and linguistic communication in the twocommunities.
