Sonochemical oxidation of hypophosphite ions in water was investigated for recovery and recycling of hypophosphite ions in plating water. In particular, we examined the effect of sonication time, ultrasound frequency, and temperature, solution pH on the sonochemical oxidation of hypophosphite ions and the resulting phosphite ions and phosphate ions. We found that the amount of hypophosphite ions oxidized and the resulting phosphite ions and phosphate ions increased with longer sonication time and higher frequency of ultrasound. On the other hand, temperature and solution pH did not affect the oxidation of hypophosphite ions. Furthermore, we found that the oxidation of hypophosphite ions was enhanced with the addition of hydrogen peroxide and titanium dioxide. The oxidation of hypophosphite ions was also enhanced by introducing oxygen gas into the hypophosphite solutions. Note here that the oxidation of hypophosphite ions was not observed in the absence of ultrasonication even if hydrogen peroxide and titanium dioxide were added and oxygen gas was introduced. This indicates that the oxidation of hypophosphite ions and generation of phosphite ions and phosphate ions were enhanced by combination of ultrasonication with hydrogen peroxide, titanium dioxide and oxygen gas.
