Naked gold nanoparticles (naked-AuNPs) with the diameter of 10-20 nm were homogeneously deposited onto micron-sized acrylic (Ac) particles through the sonochemical reduction of tetrachloride gold(III) ([AuCl_4]^-) in an aqueous solution in the absence of any added reductants, stabilizers and binders such as alkylthiols. The naked-AuNPs deposited on the Ac particles became larger with the increase in the initial concentration of [AuCl_4]^- in aqueous solutions. The naked-AuNPs deposited involve spherical particles, triangular and hexagonal plates. Coverage of the naked-AuNPs with the diameter of 10-20 nm immobilized on Ac particles was controlled by a repetition of ultrasonication following the addition of aqueous HAuCl_4 solution into Ac particle dispersion. Complete coverage of the naked-AuNPs on Ac particles was achieved by the repetition for five times. On the other hand, the naked-AuNPs were locally immobilized onto micron-sized polystyrene particles. This suggests that the deposition of naked-AuNPs onto polymer particles is attributed to the surface properties of polymer particles. We believe that the reductant-, stabilizer- and binder-free deposition of AuNPs onto polymer particles using ultrasound matches with economical and/or environmental requirements due to the minimization of material use, manufacturing process and waste treatment.
