A total of 36 patients (65 eyes) with atrophic and exsudative age-related macular degeneration (AMD) not suitable for lasercoagulation were treated by plasma exchange, cascade filtration and selective adsorption. Eight of these patients (16 eyes) were treated five times over a period of 21 weeks. The rheological parameters were lowered in all patients after therapy. After a single therapy the median improvement of visual acuity was 0.6 lines (IQR 1.8) in all eyes. Of 26 of the 65 eyes, 26 showed an improvement of one line or more. Among these, five revealed an improvement of two lines and nine of three lines or more. The eight patients treated repeatedly over a period of 21 weeks, showed a median improvement of 0.6 lines (IQR 1.5) after a single treatment and an improvement of 1.8 lines (IQR 1.8) after 21 weeks, while the control group showed a slight deteriotation of visual acuity (0.2 lines) after the same time.
