Very little was known concerning Milton HAIGHT until the author brought his life to light by successfully discovering the materials related to him mostly at Johns Hopkins University. Milton HAIGHT (1855-96) was born in Ontario, Canada. He graduated from the University of Toronto in 1884, majoring in mathematics in which he distinguished himself. After teaching at Port Hope High School for a year, he was admitted to the Graduate School of Johns Hopkins University in 1885. Then, although his application for a Ph. D. was accepted, he had to postpone his taking the examinations in 1887 on account of his eye trouble. Thus, he looked for a teaching position and obtained it at Sapporo Agricultural College through a Japanese alumnus, Shosuke SATO, a graduate of the College, who received a Ph. D. at Johns Hopkins in 1886 and was Acting Director of the College at that time. As professor of mathematics, physics, and English, HAIGHT arrived at Sapporo early in February 1887 and stayed there until August 1892. There, he married Katharine Barbara LIGHT in 1891. On returning to Canada, HAIGHT became professor of mathematics at Whetham College, Vancouver in 1892, but the College was soon closed because of financial difficulty. He went back to Ontario in 1893 and there he taught mathematics at Collegiate Institute, Strathroy. He still wished to complete his doctor's course at Johns Hopkins but was suddenly prevented by death due to typhoid fever, which occurred in summer 1896 when he was visiting his relatives in Waterloo, Ontario. He had a daughter, Rachel Webb, who was born in Japan in 1892.
