A tactile display presents virtually the sense of touching an actual object to human. Many studies of tactile displays have been conducted because its applications are expected in various fields, such as human-machine interface, robotics, virtual reality and medical/welfare equipments. This paper proposes a simple tactile display using vibration of multiple cantilevers so as to express texture feeling like clothes. The simple tactile display is designed by considering distribution of a tactile sense and characteristics of Pacinian corpuscle. The simple tactile display has eight cantilevers connected to the actuators and presents tactile stimulations to a fingertip via vibrations in the tips of the cantilevers. To control the input voltage of the actuator, a neural network is used to compensate for the nonlinear characteristics of the actuator. By considering the regularity of cloth structure, driving patterns of the multiple cantilevers are proposed. Subjective evaluation experiments show that the designed simple tactile display has a possibility of presenting the sense of touching to cloth such as cotton and polyester by controlling frequency of multiple cantilevers.
