William Empson wrote the paper, 'Argufying in Poetry', in 1963. This is the first paper which he used 'argufying' as a title. In this paper, he confessed that he focused on this word, 'argufying' for a long time. In fact, he used it for the first time in 'Milton and Bentley' included in Some Versions of Pastoral (1935) which it is the second book written by Empson. Since I would like to study the meaning of 'argufying', which he used in his books, first, I will define 'argufying' which he used in 'Argufying in Poetry' and compare 'argufying' used by him with 'argufying' given in dictionary. Secondly, I will try to classify 'argufying' as two types, one is 'argufying' as diachronic meaning that includes generation gap like between parents and son or daughter and etc, another is 'argufying' as lateral meaning that does not consider time like synchronic way, while I describe some instances in his books or papers as well as other authors' papers. Finally, I would like to try to interpret one of his 'ambiguities' in Seven Types of Ambiguity or itself [Seven Types of Ambiguity] as his 'argufying'.
