The purpose in this paper is to prove that Seven Types of Ambiguity and Some Versions of Pastoral have a common point. So, in this paper, I would like to make some distinction among Empson's Seven Types of Ambiguity. By making this distinction, I would like to see his multi meanings and a double meaning which contains an opposite or non-opposite meaning. In particular I emphasize the double meaning which can be interpreted as opposite. This opposite meaning is more important and worth notice because it implies Empson's complex concepts. So, for this reason, I would like to focus on opposite meaning. And, in fact, in his Seven Types of Ambiguity, Empson discusses this seventh type which is full of contradiction. This contradiction indicates a division in the author's mind. Also Stanley Hyman says about Some Versions of Pastoral that it continues all the features of Seven Types of Ambiguity. Hyman even goes further in Empson's close reading of Seven Types of Ambiguity and says that Empson has added a number of further development and emphasis in Some Versions of Pastoral. Therefore in my opinion, Empson's opposite concepts including the seventh type in Seven Types of Ambiguity is carried over Some Versions of Pastoral as well. So I would like to prove this by quoting some examples of such opposite ambiguities in Seven Types of Ambiguity and Some Versions of Pastoral.
