William Empson, who published Seven Types of Ambiguity in 1930, is still regarded as an eminent literary critic. However, the use of his key terms, 'ambiguity' in Seven Types of Ambiguity and 'pastoral' in Some Versions of Pastoral, are so complicated and elusive that we cannot easily understand them. Likewise, his terms, 'contradiction' and 'opposite', which he often refers to the seventh type of Seven Types of Ambiguity, are difficult to define exactly. It is also not clear whether he makes a clear distinction between 'contradiction' and 'opposite'. Therefore, in this paper, I would like to compare 'contradiction' which is to be carried over in Some Versions of Pastoral and 'opposite' in the seventh type of Seven Types of Ambiguity. In short, the purpose of this paper is to understand the elusive meanings of Empson's 'contradiction' and 'opposite'.
