The results of the survey for the chemical constituents of more than 200 species of the Pteropsida, including 84 species representing 26 genera of the Copeland's Pteridaceae revealed that pterosins and pterosides (illudalane-type sesquiterpens) are widely distributed within the Pteridaceae, but are absent in other families of ferns with the sole exception of Plagiogyria matsumureana. The wide and restricted distribution of such compounds within the Copeland's Pteridaceae supports the Copeland's Pteridaceae is an unified natural group. The occurrence of 2(R)-onitisin 14-O-β-D-glucoside in P. matsumureana lends support to the phylogenetic affinity between the Plagiogyriaceae and Pteridaceae as suggested by Diels (1899). The occurrence of monachosorins (dimeric pterosins) in Formosan Dennstaedtia scandens and Mexican D. distenta, which are differentiated by cytology, suggests the close relationship between them. Further occurrence of monachosorins in the Monachosorum species shows the affinity between the Monachosorum and the Dennstaedtia. The presence of 2β-hydroxy-ent-kaurane 2-O-β-D-glucosides, which are characteristic for the genus Pteris, in the lindsaeoid ferns, indicates that they are closely related to Pteris ferns. The frond shapes and the chemical features of Pteris ferns will render a great service to the phylogenetical taxonomy of the genus Pteris. Moreover, the classification within the Thelypteridaceae, Polypodiaceae and the Arachniodes are discussed.
