Recent Chinese publications on fertility regulation advocate the use of Kudingcha (苦丁茶), which comes mainly from the leaves of Ilex cornuta and Ilex latifolia. According to Ben Cao Gang Mu Shi Yi (本草綱目拾遺), Jiao-Ci-Cha (角刺茶), or leaves of Shi-Da-Gong-Lao (十大功〓) was the most miraculous medicine for terminating pregnancy. A market survey of Kudingcha in Hong Kong revealed that commercial samples of Kudingcha were prepared either from leaves of Ilex latifolia or from leaves of Gordonia axillaris. Leaves of Ilex cornuta were sold only under the drug name Shi-Da-Gong-Lao (十大功〓). This paper reports on the pharmacognostic differences among these three kinds of leaves, and the first record on the medicinal use of the leaves of Gordonia axillaris.
