This paper intends to clarify define the concept of "social strategy" and ascertain the actual usage situation regarding the same. This paper reviews previous studies on social responsibility, "business and society", and management strategies as well as provides a framework for analyzing social strategies. To this end, Toyota Motor's hybrid vehicle business is analyzed from three perspectives: (1) compatibility between and creation of social and economic value, (2) what social strategies mean in the context of corporate activities, and (3) implementation processes. The results of this case analysis show that Toyota maintains and creates both social and economic value simultaneously, that social strategies are part of the overall strategy of the company, and that these social strategies can be viewed from many different management strategy-related perspectives, thereby revealing the actual situations in which social strategies are used.
