Almost all Adrienne Kennedy's plays are so autobiographical and full of memories that they can be categorized as the memory play. Kennedy, however, fills her work with memories not to tell the audience about her past, but to evoke many uestions about memories and remembrance, such as the definition of a memory or who does the remembering in her plays. Her so-called autobiographical essay, People Who Led to My Plays, focuses on Kennedy's never-ending remembrance of her past in order to create her work; in both Funnyhouse of a Negro and The Owl Answers, it is almost impossible to differentiate memories from illusions or the past from the present. On the other hand, both The Ohio State Murders and Sleep Deprivation Chamber concern memories of traumatic crimes. The former play makes the audience realize the impossibility of telling about traumatic memories whereas the latter insists the necessity of making every effort to remember and tell about memories to share despite the impossibility. Thus, Kennedy's plays are the memory play in which the definition of a memory and the purpose of remembering are investigated.
