• We can see a strong longing for travel in many plays by Adrienne Kennedy. It is a longing for the transformation through travel. Her protagonists, who are often writers or would-be writers, leave their home country and travel or stay abroad in order to fulfill their wish. The audience find in them writers as tourists who visit their destination with eager anticipation and many literary images about the places. It indicates that people today are likely to travel not as travelers but as tourists who gain a lot of knowledge beforehand and gaze passively what they expect to gaze at their destination; Kennedy's writer characters are no exception. However, it is impossible for Kennedy's tourists to be satisfied with their experiences as tourists. They gaze and experience something that is completely opposite their anticipation or images. In addition, once they leave the home country, they cannot return there as the same person. Certainly they undergo some transformation, but it is not the transformation they have desired. On the contrary, they lose too many things such as their home and even their identity; they realize that they can no longer belong to any place.
