Callus formation was observed in the seedlings of Swertia pseudochinensis cultured on Murashige-Skoog (MS) medium containing 0.1-10 mg/l 1-naphthaleneacetic acid (NAA) with or without 6-benzylaminopurine. Somatic embryogenesis occurred in the bright yellow calli which had been induced on MS medium containing 10 mg/lNAA and then subcultured on a medium with 1 mg/l NAA. The somatic embryos transferred to the hormone-free medium developed into plantlets which were successfully cultivated in pots.
