Michelia champaca L. and some other plants in the same genus (Magnoliaceae) are commonly used in tropical and subtropical Asia for horticultural and medicinal purposes. In Thailand, the flowers are used most frequently as cardiac, tonic, blood-tonic, anti-emetic and diuretic agents, and the essential oils of these flowers are used as ointments for headache, ophthalmia and gout. The dried flowers including short peduncles are classified in the markets in two kind of drugs, named "Dok (flower) Champa" and "Dok Champi", according to the material plants. Though medicinal utilizations of the fruits, leaves, barks, woods, roots, and root-barks can be seen in literatures, the drugs of these parts have only a little marketability. In the six species recorded their existence in Thailand, M. champaca L. (Thai local name; Champa), M. figo SPRENG. (Champi khaek), M. longifolia BLUME (Champi bahn), M. manipurensis WATT. (Champi) and M. rajaniana CRAIB (Champi luang) are described as utilizing medicinal plants. In this paper, the studies on the crude drugs of the flowers found in markets, and some related species collected in Thailand and in Japan, are reported.
