"Tung kua tzu (冬瓜子)" is crude drug in general use from old time in China and Japan, and the name was described in Shen-nung-pen-ts'ao-king (神農本草経) as "Pai kua tzu (白瓜子) (another name "Shui chi (水芝) In Ming-i-pie-lu (名医別録) were described two names of "Pai kua tzu" and "Pai tung kua (白瓜子)", moreover "Pai kua tzu" is seed of "Tung kua". However, in Hsin-hsiu-pen-ts'ao (新修本草), it was described that "Pai kua tzu is different from Pai tung kua", nothing but "Pai kua tzu is Kan kua tzu (甘瓜子)". But, since then, all Pen-ts'aos are positive in denying the opinion of "Hsin-hsiu-pen-ts'ao, there is described "Pai kua is Tung kua", moreover the seeds of "Tung kua" are used for "Pai kua tzu" and the fruits of "Tung kua" are used for "Pai tung kua" in medicine. At the present time, the origin of the plant is said as Benincasa cerifera SAVI (winter gourd or white gourd, Jap. name Tooga or Kamouri). But the author found two different forms of the seeds collected from various markets and plantations in China and Japan. The two forms, however, can not be separable by the shape of their developed plants. The seeds of one form show velvetlike appearance on the surface and have an upheaved band along their margin (I-form, Fig. 2. a-c, Fig. 3. A, C.). On the other hand, those of the other show no hairy appearance on its surface having no upheaved band along the margin at all (II-form, Fig. 2. d-f, Fig. 3. B, D.). The author decided that the name of Benincasa cerifera SAVI had been given to the I-form plant, and the II-form is a new form: B. cerifera SAVI forma emarginata K. KIMURA et SUGIYAMA.
