This paper is an introductory part of the research project that examines and compares the vision of the Italian Jesuit priest Alessandro Valignano and that of the Italian Salesian priest Vincenzo Cimatti with regard to the Japanese language. Valignano came to Japan for three times in the late 16th century as Il Visitatore (The Visitor), which was the second highest position next to General(s) in the Society of Jesus. Approximately 350 years later, Cimatti came to Japan and stayed in the country introducing the Salesian Society (Salesians of Don Bosco) to Japanese people. There are similarities and differences between the two catholic priests' attitudes and approaches towards the Japanese language, which are worth examining from the viewpoint of historical study of intercultural communication. As beginning of the research project, this paper surveys linguistic background in Valignano's time and Cimatti's time on both the Italian language and the Japanese language.
