Multi-hop Angle Calculation Based Sensor Localization in Wireless Sensor Networks

The position accuracy of range free localization is a fundamental problem in Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs). The accuracy of the localization algorithm greatly impacts the performance of the localization dependent protocols and applications, such as routing and storage. Most of the range free localization algorithms are designed by assuming that the sensor nodes are deployed in regular areas without any obstacles. This assumption does not reflect the real-world conditions, especially for outdoor deployment of WSNs. In this paper we propose a novel scheme called Multi-hop Angle Calculation (MHAC) based sensor localization in WSNs, which can greatly reduce the localization error in the irregular deployment areas. We identify the detour transmission path between any two anchor pairs by estimating the angle between the anchor pairs to that detoured transmission path. That is to say we first select the middle of the shortest transmission path between the anchor pairs and then we adjust the average hop distance according to the angle between the anchor pairs to that selected middle point. This process is repeated for every anchor pairs in the network. The simulation results show that MHAC achieves significant improvement in localization accuracy both in isotropic and anisotropic WSNs.
