For effective deployment of Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) in critical network scenarios, two major factors such as energy efficiency in reference to network lifetime, and the network reliability, are the important research issues. In critical applications of WSNs, even moderate packet loss cannot be tolerated. In this paper, we evaluate the reliability of the IEEE 802.15.4 standard based multi-hop WSNs using physical channel quality estimators. We show through simulation results that physical channel quality estimators give more accurate idea about the quality of a channel compare to logical channel quality estimators. We also evaluate the energy expenditure in terms of both physical and logical channel quality estimators that are used to assess the channel reliability.
