In this paper, a new finite-difference frequency-domain (FDFD) algorithm is derived to analyze mode propagation in periodic materials in which their relative permittivity depends on frequency. It is well known that the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method is also applicable to model the materials that their relative permittivity is dependent on frequency, but the accuracy of FDTD method for mode propagation is not sufficient and in some cases it produce significant error. This new FDFD algorithm is capable to clearly model and calculate the propagating modes in Debye type dispersive materials. In this paper, the effectiveness of our proposed FDFD algorithm is confirmed by comparing it with the FDTD method.
