In recent years there has been a significant increase in the number of young Japanese migrating to Australia(Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan,2007). In general, their aims appear to be to improve their English skills but also to explore the meaning of their lives and escape from harsh realities of life in Japan. It is evident that this happened first among young women in the late 1980s. In these 10 years, this journey has become popular among young Japanese mothers and their young children who are disillusioned by their daily lives in Japan. Moreover, teenagers that are unable to adapt to their school lives in Japan have been sent to Australia by their families. It is clearly evident that all of these Japanese migrant groups have problems settling into Australian culture and society. Although there is an urgent need for many kinds of social supports, there are very few ethnic social work practices that cater to Japanese new comers run by social workers. This paper will focus on recent research that reveals an alternative ′social work′ practice that is offered by a Japanese travel agency in Brisbane. In this case study, transcript data from several interviews with travel agency staff demonstrates how they provide many kinds of social work practices with their problematic Japanese ′customers.′These practices include professional social work values and skills even though the travel agents have no formal training in social work ethics, practices and theories. The paper will also reflect on why there is such an absence of culturally appropriate support services available to this group and how appropriate services can be provided to cater to the diverse groups of recent Japanese migrants coming to Australia.
