Although English-based loanwords -- known as gairaigo -- offer a remarkable cognate resource for Japanese learners of English, society is ambivalent toward them. Therefore this paper examined university freshmen's attitudes towards gairaigo. Questionnaire responses indicated that participants were divided about the impact of gairaigo on their English studies, yet were receptive to learning more about it. And they accurately recognized pronunciation discrepancies to be the biggest problem associated with gairaigo. Results also indicated that respondents had formed their own opinions about gairaigo, influenced particularly by the mass media and the people around them. Notably, participants' junior and senior high English teachers had seldom mentioned gairaigo, and when they had, had spoken negatively of it.
