This paper compares two frequency lists of English-based loanwords in Japanese, one based on the 2001 editions of the Mainichi Shimbun and one based on data gathered from the Internet in 2005 by the Leipzig Corpora Initiative. It finds that the most frequent loanwords tend to have comparable frequencies in both lists, in contrast to less frequent loanwords. Thus, it can be seen that well-established loanwords are relatively stable across time and language users.
