This paper proposes Multi Ring Based Application Level Multicast (MR-ALM) protocol that establishes virtual multi ring as overlay network in large-scale applications. In the large-scale applications, tree based topology is not suitable because the depth of tree is highly increased. When an upstream node leaves the group it causes performance degradation drastically due to tree reconstruction. Even though ring based topology can overcome the drawback, it has scalability problem which is potentially large routing delay a packet may incur especially for large multicast groups. To reduce the routing delay and provide scalability of the ring topology of overlay network, we suggest forming multi ring topology. Finally, we evaluate the performance of the proposed methods through simulations, and prove the effectiveness of the proposal.
