Although grammatical gender ceased to exist during the period of Middle English, and the case forms simplified on and after Middle English, grammatical number has retained an extremely important role in present-day English, as can be seen in how the number system has an overriding importance for nouns in English. Some semantic, morphological, and syntactic features of nouns from the viewpoint of grammatical number are discussed in this paper. Principal topics taken up here are as follows: the relationship between a noun and an article; semantic relationships between countable and non-countable nouns; the case of some nouns possessing no plural form in number, and some nouns possessing no singular form in number; and finally, some ways in which number is reflected differently in English and Japanese.
