This paper is written as one of the series of linguistic investigations into how native speakers of English understand the language and construct sentences daily. The following questions are considered in this paper: How do native speakers construct, understand, and produce relative pronouns using their mental grammar? How do they recognize the semantic differences between restrictive and non-restrictive uses of a relative pronoun? It is also considered how the syntactic and semantic differences between the sentence elements are linked by a relative pronoun and a coordinate conjunction. The table of contents of this paper is as follows: 0. Introduction; 1. Functions and semantic roles of the coordinate conjunction and; 2. Relative pronouns as a clause connective; 2.1. Process of generating a restrictive use; 2.2. Process of generating a non-restrictive use and its semantic resemblance to coordinated clauses; 3. Relative pronouns in two uses; 3.1. Semantic comparison between a relative pronoun in restrictive and non-restrictive uses, and adjective in attributive and predicative uses; 3.2. Semantic differences between a relative pronoun in restrictive and non-restrictive uses; 4. Relative pronouns as a subordinate conjunction; and 5. Conclusion.
