The coordinating conjunction and is one of the most useful connectors in English. The conjuncts connected with it are not arranged at random. The conjunction connects sentence elements which have equal rank syntactically. Semantically, conjuncts are put in coordinate phrases, clauses, or sentences in order, under some semantic restrictions. The order of the conjuncts generates various meaning, such as addition: "also", sequence: "then", result: "so", contrast: "yet", and condition: "if". The distribution of meanings under the entry and includes fourteen or fifteen citations on average in both monolingual and bilingual dictionaries. This is natural considering the conjunction's original function errand and assigned use. The fact that a large number of meanings is given to and shows that the ways of connections which and joins its conjuncts are many and varied. A basic, or core, meaning of and is "in addition to", and this meaning underlies to the other meanings of the word. The other meanings are generated by the relations between the conjuncts which and joins in a sentence. Some semantic properties between conjuncts connected by and are analysed in the paper.
