The length of the antennae of pill bugs was extended by wearing Teflon tubes on the tips of their antennae. Each individual in the test group (n=10) was placed on the top of a stairs, which consisted of five steps, and required to climb it down. Each distance between one step and the next one of the stairs was 5, 10, 15, 17 and 25mm in the order from the first to the fifth step. The median the maximum reachable step was 4. Additionally, the other two groups were tested in the same apparatus. In the free walk group (n=14), their antennae were also wore Teflon tubes. However, they were allowed to move freely in an arena for ten minutes before placing on the stairs. In the control group (n=14), their antennae were not covered with the tubes. The median of the maximum reachable step was 2 and 2.5 respectively. Statistical tests showed that the value for the test group was significantly larger than those of the free walk and the control groups respectively. This result suggests that pill bugs have distance perception with reference to the length of their antennae and could adjust it even when the length of the antennae was extended.
