The purpose of this paper is to seek the possibility of further development for DV-related research in Japan, with a specific concern on the influence of DV over children, by reviewing the preceding research mostly in America. Two main streams of DV research can be distinguished in America, from 70's on when DV has got visible as a social problem. The first one is the sociological approach based on the quantitative survey, while the other one is progressed by the feminist approach mostly with the qualitative survey. One of the prominent as well as polemical issues between these two approaches is a controversy on gender symmetrical DV behavior. Despite of rich empirical evidence of gender symmetry in DV behavior from the sociological national surveys, feminist qualitative studies are very critical against gender symmetry, insisting that most of the severe victims are overwhelmingly women. DV research has been dominated by the feminist approach in Japan. Recent development of DV research provides us with the classification of DV.
