As cohabitation with children decreases, remaining single longer and higher divorce retes increase the necessity for support from siblings, making the relation between siblings more important, This paper examines the family influence from partners and the children on their selections of siblings as source of emotional support by using national representative data in Japan: The Japanese National Family Research(NFRJ03). Logistic regression analysis obtained the following major findings:1) A child doesn't compensate for siblings. However, a child obstructed sibling selection by decreasing contact frequency with siblings of young female cohorts.2) A central factor includes improving the probability that "There are sisters" selects siblings in all cohorts in women.3) The probability that siblings are selected by existing siblings in both male anf female aged cohorts is improved.4) The probability of selecting siblings rises for unmarried persons, persons whose partners are dead or divorced more than having a partner, for men more than women, and to the person of an aged cohort more than a young cohort. The probability of selecting siblings rises in men more than women; it is especially high for aged single men. In the present social situation, aging and unmarried life rates rose rapidly, which argues for the necessity of future research on sibling relationships among the elderly, especially among men.
