This study investigates the learning motivation of Japanese high school EFL learners. Four major problems were addressed in this research, 1) the limitation of generalizing results, 2) the possibility of overlooking factors, 3) the difficulty of assuming general tendencies, and 4) deficiencies in using statistical procedures. Ichikawa's (1998) model of learning motivation has been utilized here because it overcomes the first and the second problems. This model consists of six factors, and they are organized along two axes: "The Importance of Learning Contents" and "The Utility of Learning Results". Also, the six factors are divided into two groups according to the strength of emphasis on "Importance of Learning Contents"; one is "contents-attached" and the other is "contents-detached". To overcome the final two problems, a survey was conducted. Multi-Group CFA (SEM by Simultaneous Analysis for Multiple Groups) shows that the structure of factors and the measurement of learning motivation can be applied to Japanese high school EFL learners at any achievement stage. The learning motivation of "contents-attached" factors tends to vary, corresponding to achievement, but that of "contents-detached" appears to remain constant. Correlations among factors are rather stable with-group (in "contents-attached" and in "contents-detached"), but are rather variable between the two factor groups.
