This paper reports on the development of Japanese novice EFL learners' confidence in some aspects of L2 writing before and after a month-long series in process writing. A 1-5 Likert scale questionnaire was administered to the subjects, freshmen at a Kosen, a five-year educational institution for engineers, before and after the treatment. The results revealed that the treatment brought about significant gains in confidence in many facets of their L2 writing, including writing in English in general, writing coherently, and developing paragraphs. The treatment, however, did not boost confidence in revising drafts independently, but the subjects began to develop assurance in a limited arena of L2 forms, mainly those that seemed easier for them to perceive and improve, such as sentence subjects, idioms, and word order. The results also revealed a gap between actual difficulties the subjects had and their awareness of them. In terms of usefulness for improving drafts, the subjects preferred student-teacher conferences to whole class workshops, with peer reviews being considered least useful.
