This paper investigates the effects of 'global consciousness' on coherence of English compositions of Japanese university students. Thirty-five Japanese university students (20 good writers and 15 poor writers) were given the direction of 'global consciousness' ("Do not worry about errors of mechanics, but pay attention only to meaning while writing") and asked to write free compositions of about 100 words. The previous study, Aoki and Motooka (1990) clarified that 'global conciousness' was effective for improving especially the writing of poor writers on holistic scoring. It was found that poor writers of an experimental group obtained significantly higher scores in both content and mechanics than those of a control group, and good writers of an experimental group obtained significantly higher scores in content than those of a control group. This study investigates what effects the direction of 'global consciousness' concretely have on the content of writing by using the concept of coherence, and on the mechanics by counting the number of mechanical errors. The results indicate that the writings of the experimental groups of poor writers and good writers were significantly more coherent than the writings of the control groups.
