This paper presents the experimental results on flood flows around an oblique weir in a compound open channel. Four different weirs are placed in the main channel to understand the effects of the angle to the main channel and the shape on flow pattern. Flow visualization is carried out together with the measurement of three mean velocity components and water depth. With the increase of the weir angle, it is found that flow in the main channel tends to move toward the flood plain in the upstream side of the weir while flow over the weir is apt to attack the main channel side. Strong upward currents move around the weir on the flood plain with shallow water depth, resulting in an oblique hydraulic jump on the flood plain and a large recirculation zone in the main channel at the downstream side of the weir.
