A Large Eddy Simulation using the Smagorinsly model with a damping function near a solid wall is carried out for turbulent flow in a wide open channel. The flow at Re_*=480 is calculated with 96^*96^*96 grid points for the flow region of 6.4h^*h^*3.2h. The calculated results are processed to discuss the distributions of turbulence quantities and the budgets of the transport equations for the normal Reynolds stresses near the free surface. It is confirmed that the turbulence energy takes the minimum value below the free surface that in the transport equation for the normal stress to the free surface the dissipation is in balance with the viscous diffusion. The behavior of anisotropic dissipation rate and its modeling are also discussed.
