The purpose of this study was to investigate the positive emotional responses in five-to six-year-old children after they were praised. In study 1, the children solved puzzles, after which the experimenter gave them feedback in the form of either "Great" or "You tried hard." Each session was videotaped, and the children's facial responses, posture, and speech were coded. The results revealed two trends: boys expressed many more positive emotions after the experimenter praised them by saying "Great" than they did after the experimenter said "You tried hard"; further, boys smiled after both types of feedback but displayed more signs of pride (e.g., putting their arms up) after the experimenter praised them by saying "Great." In study 2, the children were asked to rate the extent to which they were likely to display emotional reactions after someone had praised them for an achievement by saying "Great" and "You tried hard." The children's ratings revealed that they were highly likely to display a positive emotional reaction like a smile, but were not very likely to display signs of pride like thrusting their chests out.
