The Zengakumuke Nihongo course, one of the Japanese language courses available at the International Student Center of Fukui University, has four levels from the Nihongo I class for beginners to the Nihongo IV class for advanced learners. In this course, kanji teaching starts in the Nihongo II class. In this paper, one of the topics discussed is the process by which we have taught our current method for learning kanji. In addition, the paper investigates effectual kanji teaching for Japanese learners from both a kanji and a non-kanji background. As for the kanji textbook, we now use [Minna no Nihongo Kanji I (English Edition)].Through an analytical comparison of a few kanji textbooks and individual interviews with students, four methods for improving kanji teaching have been found. At first, useful kanji for daily use should be introduced to make the students life more convenient. The following kanji [始,留,文,正,特,門,験,議,用,不,品,場,福,井]should be added to the textbook. becondly, an explanation of how kanji are composed should be given step by step. Thirdly, On-Kun ( 音,訓)readings should be taught at the how to write kanji is also important even for learners from a kanji background because some of the kanji characters used in China are simplified and different from the ones used in Japan.
