Social supports is bathering momentum as promoting return to society of the mentally handicapped,and various practices are being carried out. However, there is still a long to go before the related study will have singificantly fulfilled its purpose as to what concrete effect that social support would have. As a result of survey and analysis conducted this time involving relationship between social support and adaptation to life of the mentally handicapped who are living alone two dimensions of living technique and participation to society have been extracted for adaptation to life and it was understood that there had been involved a support as a step in living technique and an emotional support in participation to society respectively. It was also understood that a great role had been played by a support that "teachs what is not understood" within a support as a step in maintaining the life of the mentally handicapped. On the part of those offering aids hereafter, forming a connection in which a support that "teaches what is not understood" may increase could be expected.
