This paper reports a newly developed lathe type numerical control (NC) machining device that works inside a high pressure chamber, where can be applied to hydrostatic pressure up to 400 MPa, in order to realize damage free machining of hard-brittle materials. It is recently known that hard-brittle materials can be machined in ductile mode when their critical depth of cut is very small. The authors assessed the stiffness of the device's elements, thus designed a high stiffness tool-stage to realize the precision machining. Performance of the stage was evaluated experimentally. Effects of stage stiffness on machining properties are discussed.
