Wood preservatives in sufficient quantity or concentration are potentially capable of causing irritation or corrosion for eye and skin. The damage created depends upon the nature of chemicals contained in wood preservatives, Volatile organic solvent are widely used to dissolve other ingredients. However, certain chemicals are harmful even in small amounts to eye and skin. Some compounds may be absorbed through the skin. Except for the acute oral, dermal and inhalation toxicity tests, eye and dermal irritation tests are very important. The eye is commonly injured by a variety of chemicals that enter it accidentally or maliciously when wood is treated with wood preservatives by various kinds of treating process. Also, the skin has many functions which may be injured by chemicals. Recently, allergic contact dermatitis caused by termite control chemicals have increasingly been important. In this paper, acute eye and dermal irritation and corrosion tests of wood preservatives were carried out using male mouse and rabbit. Standerd operating procedures for the feeding, handling and care of mice and rabbits were used. The numbers of the animals are 3 for rabbit and 5 for mouse. in eatch chemicals. Suspentions of ingredients using 0. 1 % powder tragacanth as suspending agent were applied for both eye and dermal tests. In the case of eye irritation test, 3 drops of 1% suspension of chemicals were applied to rabbit eye for eye drop. Scale for scoring ocular lesions by Draize was applied in the local irritation test. Swelling effect was examined after subcutaneous injection of suspension to planta pedis of mouse. swelling index= (Weight of ankle at 24 hours after injection of chenicals)/(Weight of ankle of control)×100 The results obtained were as follow: 1) In the case of zine naphthenate, very slight erythema (barely perceptible) were observed. 2) Formulation of wood preservatives showed severe erythema and edema. 3) Subcutaneous injection of suspention of chemicals was used for dermal test using 0.1 % powder tragacanth using mouse. Chlordan and polychlorophenols showed rather week swelling effect comparing to zinc naphthenate.
