In numerical lifting-surface theory the local flow near blade roots is treated quite crudely because the presence of the boss is ignored. Inclusion of the boss becomes necessary when the local flow near blade roots is to be estimated accurately. This is especially true when the boss ratio is quite large, such as controllable pitch propellers and propellers for high speed carfts. In this paper a simplified method is developed to include the boss effect in the prediction of marine propeller performance. A surface source distribution is used to replace the boss and incorporated with the vortex lattice representation of propeller blades. The influence of the boss on thrust, torque and pressure is investigated, and the comparison of numerical results with experimental data shows that the accuracy of predicted blade pressure distributions in inner radii is improved by including the boss.
