3. Research and development of PBCF (propeller Boss Cap Fins) : Novel energy-saving device to enhance propeller efficiency

Paying attention to the efficiency loss by a propeller hub vortex, PBCF (Propeller Boss Cap Fins) is proposed to enhance the efficiency of ship's screw propeller. The PBCF concept is that the same number of fins as that of the propeller blades is attached to the boss cap (hab cone) and rotates together with the propeller blades. The hub vortex is eliminated and PBCF recovers the kinetic energy of rotation flow around boss. Thereby the propeller efficiency is significantly enhanced by PBCF. The mechanism of the PBCF effect was researched and clarified through flow visualization, flow measurement by 3D-LDV, and force measurement of PBCF. Furthermore significant numbers of sea trial data of various types of ships were obtained and analyzed to evaluate the PBCF effect. These results lead us to believe that PBCF is an excellent energy-saving device because of its simple concept/structure and reliable efficiency gain of about four per cent.
