A numerical method for the prediction of the steady performance of contra-rotating propellers is described in this paper. The vortex lattice method is applied to the calculations of propeller blades. A panel method employing surface source distribution is used to consider the influence of propeller boss. To determine the trailing vortex geometry of contra-rotating propellers, a wake model for single propeller is used with modification. The trailing vortex pitches are determined by aligning the trailing vortices to the circumferentially averaged flow far behind the propellers. A number of contra-rotating propellers are calculated by using the present method. The agreement between calculation and experiment is satisfactory. The numerical results indicate that the boss should be considered to evaluate the loading near blade root accurately. The importance of considering the trailing vortex interaction of contra-rotating propellers is shown by comparative calculations.
