The use of such constraining members as strong-back etc., in welding butt joint of actual ship's assembly work, is indispensable. Without use of such constraining members, any occurrence of angular deformation of welding butt joint would be inevitable. On the other hand, such constraining members tends to work to disturb shrinkage of butt joint and increase degree of constraint to cause occurrence of detrimentable residual stress. Under the circumstance, the present authors, in an intent to determine the characteristics of constraining force, performed experiments on characteristics of typical of three types of constraining members and keel blocks. The followings is the conclusion:- (1) Constraining coefficient developed during initial stage of the use of diagonal welded type strong-back approximately ranges from 15t/mm to 20t/mm. (2) Constraining coefficient developed during initial stage of the use of wedge chocking type strong-back reached as high as the approximated 40-60t/mm, with a distinguished slipping phenomenon observable. (3) Constraining coefficient developed during initial stage of the use of rib type strong-back approximated 20-30t/mm, with characteristics of intermediate of those for the above mentioned two types strong-backs observable. (4) The constraining force of keel block is extremely minor. Its initial constraining coefficient experimented registered the values of less than 1/200 of the value registered for the above rib type. Such values registered will justify ignoring of any constraining force of keel block in any representation of opinions covering constraining force of the welded butt joints.
