The present authors, in carrying out the subject research, subjected vertical block welding butt joints of actual ship to various constraining conditions and took measurements of amount of movement of block against the ground, and the residual stress which occurs in block proper. Then an approximate formula which had been induced from the ideal model was applied to the results of analyses of relativities among the shrinkage, movement and residual stress as measured above. The followings are the conclusion:- (1) Under the normal condition of constraint of block butt joints of ship assembly, the shrinkage of butt joints is approximately constant regardless of degree of constraint, and generally agree to calculated value of shrinkage of free butt joint deduced from the formula of Watanabe-Satoh. (2) Result of measurement of shrinkage of welding butt joint failed to show any difference of constraint in accordance with different given conditions. However, in the case of measurement of movment of block against the ground, difference of constraint in accordance with given changes of condition was clearly noted. (3) Result of calculation obtained through formula deduced from ideal model is similar in trend to result of measurement of actual ship block. Especially, numerically calculated value and actually measured value is in quite identical in the case of movement of block against the ground. (4) In the case of master butt welding method, shrinkage of butt joint is almost same to shrinkage of free butt joint, and any localized concentration of residual stress was not observed, with little welding deformation of block. In conclusion, we may consider that master butt welding method is an excellent procedure which is close to free welding butt joint.
