The purpose of this study was to consider the teaching and learning of problemsolvingstyle lessons in elementary school. Group A consisted of third-grade pupils who tried tosolve the problem themselves. Group B consisted of pupils who tried to solve the problemwith other students or a teacher.Pupils in Group A discussed how to solve the problem after doing their own thinking.Those in Group B tried to understand the problem and discussed how to draw figures relatedto it. The teacher of Group A helped pupils to engage in useful discussion andcommunication. The teacher of Group B helped pupils to understand the problem.Small groups are effective for problemsolving lessons in arithmetic. Every student in asmall group was able to carry out problemsolving activities in arithmetic effectively.Key words : Arithmetic, Problem Solving, Small Group Teaching, Practical Study
