文学部創設百周年記念論文集ITreatise序I. わだつみのこえの製作目的II. モニュメントとしてのわだつみのこえIII. わだつみのこえの受難IV. わだつみのこえとロダンV. 結びShin Hongoh (1905-1980) was a sculptor who was not satisfied with merely showing his works in exhibitions. Rather, he felt that sculpture should be placed outside within an urban setting and be intended to communicate a message to the public. By learning from Michelangelo and studying the monuments of Rodin and Bourdelle, he succeeded in creating numerous monuments throughout Japan. WADATUMI-NO-KOE(1950), a memorial to student-soldiers who perished during World War II, is one such monument. In this work, Hongoh intended not only to mourn the students but also to stir the masses to strive toward lasting peace. After the Paris World Exposition of 1900, Japanese sculpture came to be inspired by the works of Rodin. One sculptor who strongly felt such an influence was Kotaro Takamura, Hongoh's teacher and the first to translate Rodin on Art into Japanese. For this reason, WADATUMI-NO-KOEshows clear traces of Hongoh's thorough observation of Rodin's Age of Bronze.
