An experimental apparatus is made in order to analyze wear particles in lubricant. This apparatus is based on Ferrography method using magnetic separation technique. The dependence of the magnetic force on wear particles is investigated in view of the separation of different size particles experimentally. The magnetic force on them is determined by their size and the strength of magnetic fields to which they are subjected and the magnetic field gradient. Therefore, substrates which have the drain without a wire and the drain with one ferromagnetic wire at each side of a drain are used. Because magnetic wires yield extremely high gradient magnetic fields near the wires. The wear particles formed in Cu/Fe rubbing are deposited and form tracks at the drain. It is found from the observation that the tracks are aligned with magnetic fields. The value of the width of a track is measured as a function of the distance from a outlet of a drain pipe. The value of the width decreases as the distance increases. An increase of the magnetic fields has hardly any effect on the particle size distribution for the drain without a wire, but enable to obtain the accurate particle size distribution for the drain with two wires. Because big size particles of lower susceptibility are captured due to the strong magnetic field gradient. The results of this study show that the drain with two wires is effective for the separation of wear particles.
