As part of the studies on the use of Stoll's method for counting hookworm eggs contained in the solution of feces in test tubes, tests were performed to determine how many counts should be sampled successively so that one might draw inferences about the population mean from the sample mean, that is to say, inferences about the average number of hookworm eggs in the solution of feces in a test tube from the average number of eggs in aunit capacity of 0.15cc of the solution sampled in succession. The numbers of counts which should be sampled for the values of m (m=1, 2, 3,..., 30), when [numerical formula] have been calculated as follows : (1) when m=1, 31 successive counts should be sampled, (2) when m=4, 8 successive counts should be sampled, (3) when m=7, 5 successive counts should be sampled, (4) when m=10, 3 or 4 successive counts should be sampled, and (5) when m=30, 1 count should be sampled.
